The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce the opening of “Juror’s Choice: 2007 Regional Award Winners” art exhibition which will run from May 17 - July 6, 2008 in the Thomas Center Main Gallery. A free public reception will be held Thursday, May 29, 2008 from 5 – 7 PM. The exhibition features a variety of 2D and 3D work by four Florida award winners from the Thomas Center Galleries’ 2007 Regional Juried Exhibition. The exhibition was juried by David Edgar and features work by: Angela Hoppe, Tom Hundersmarck, Nancy Moskovitz and Kimberly Willcox.

Nancy Moskovitz received a 2007 Juror’s Choice $1000 award. Ocala artist, Nancy Moskovitz paints the quiet beauty in everyday life. Her subject matter includes regional landscapes and casual portraits of children. Skilled in acrylic, oil, pastel, and water media, rich luminous color defines her work. In 2007, three of her pieces won for Best of Show in juried regional competitions. As an artist-in-residence for Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, Moskovitz has been painting the unspoiled beauty of Sapelo Island, GA. In 2006, Nancy’s paintings hung in the Appleton Museum of Art’s prestigious Biennial Exhibition and her two Ocala Horse Fever horses raised over $28,000 for the Marion Cultural Alliance in 2002. Ocala Style Magazine featured her work featured in the Dec. 2001. Nancy earned her B.A. in education and art history from Simmons College. As a mother of three, Nancy taught for 15 years in Ocala before pursuing professional painting full time in 2003.

Angela Hoppe received a 2007 Juror’s Choice $500 award. Gainesville artist Angela Hoppe studied art at the Pratt Institute of Art, University of Miami, University of Texas and the University of Florida. Her studio is also located in the Red Door studio, an old 1800s office building in downtown Gainesville.  Hoppe’s work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions, art festivals and collections. She states, “My paintings are a celebration of the ordinary. I find the color interactions more important to me than the form.  The objects that I depict are so familiar as to be intuitive. I like seeing the beauty in an apple, orange, flowers or a glass vase primarily because they can be so overlooked.”

Kimberly Willcox received a 2007 Juror’s Choice $500 award. For more than 15 years, Kimberly Willcox worked as an acclaimed designer, illustrator and creator of a highly successful line of jewelry and functional art for galleries, museums and upscale shops world wide. Her work is in the collection of Roseanna Arquette, Elizabeth Montgomery, Jacqueline Bissett, Paul Simon, Steven Tyler, Alexander Julian and Marriott Hotels. Some of her work has been commissioned by the White House as part of the permanent holiday collection, as well as for clients from HGTV, ABC’s series “Thirty Something”, Woody Allen’s New York Stories, the India Ministry for the Promotion of Handcrafts, Cirque du Soleil and Sony. Today Kimberly resides in a converted feed mill in Gainesville, FL with her life partner and two children.

Tom Hundersmarck received a 2007 Juror’s Choice Honorable Mention.   A full-time psychologist, Gainesville artist Tom Hundersmarck earned his Ph. D. in Counseling Psychology from Temple University, M.Ed. in Rehabilitation Counseling and a B.F.A. in Painting from Hartford Art School at the University of Harford CT. His work has been exhibited in over 40 group exhibitions, nine one-person shows and in several corporate collections throughout the Northeast and Florida. He states,"My work as a painter and a psychologist are inexorably intertwined. Both involve the “encounter”, whether it is therapeutic with a patient or artistic with the blank canvas. As the encounter begins, so does the relationship, each with a clear white slate, full of emptiness. By the end, the encounter is filled with a complex story, a rich texture, a rhythm of color and emotion; it is filled with objective facts and intense emotional moments."
