Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce the opening of the Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts (GACA) art exhibition. The exhibition will run from May 24 – June 29, 2008 in the Thomas Center Mezzanine Gallery. A free public reception will be held at the Thomas Center on Thursday, May 29 from 5 – 7 p.m.
The exhibition features 50 works of art by the Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts' students. The association was founded in 1967 by parents and educators who wanted education in the arts to be available to all children in the Gainesville area. They recognized the positive relationship among education in the arts, academics and self-esteem. In small workshops usually comprised of 8 to 10 children, GACA creates a no pressure atmosphere where creativity can flourish. By offering workshops year-round at Littlewood Elementary, the Acrosstown Repertory Theatre and other sites, the group has served thousands of area children, including a large percentage on annual scholarships. “Getting All Children into the Arts” is both the Gainesville Association for the Creative Arts' motto and mission. The arts do more than teach a specific skill, they try to teach focus, discipline and encourage a sense of community. The GACA believes that it is the process of creation, not a product, that is most important.
The Thomas Center Galleries are located at 302 NE 6th Ave. Gainesville, FL 32601. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00 PM.
